Chapter 13: Teamwork
Mr. Hardy does not want Smuff to get to Jackley. Jackley might clam up and all hope of confession would be gone! Frank and Joe resolve to make sure Smuff does not make the six o’clock flight to Albany. But how? Gathering Chet, Tony, Biff, Phil and Jerry, the boys determine to stall Smuff. They take over their friend Rocco’s fruit market a block from Smuff’s house. As Smuff pulls out of his driveway, one by one the boys try to stop him to talk, but he brushes them off. Suddenly Frank thinks of lighting the trash incinerator behind the market. “Fire!” yells Joe. Smuff dashes to the rescue, eager to be a hero. A hero he is – but a hero who has missed his plane!
